Béchar

Béchar is a municipality and the capital city of Béchar Province, Algeria. It functions as a commune that is coextensive with the Béchar District.

The natural surroundings of the city are defined by extreme geography and an arid environment. Béchar sits at an elevation of 747 metres on the banks of the Oued Béchar, which cuts through the urban area from the northeast to the southwest. The rocky highlands of the Djebel Béchar overlook the city from the southeast, reaching an elevation of 1,206 metres to the east, while the towering Djebel Antar range rises further to the northeast to 1,953 metres. In sharp contrast to these rugged heights, the northwestern territory stretches out as a flat, rocky reg.

The climate features a hot desert classification (Köppen BWh), characterized by extremely hot summers and warm winters despite the elevated setting. Rainfall throughout the year remains very sparse, leaving the summer months exceptionally dry. Surrounding agricultural zones rely on irrigation to produce dates from over one hundred thousand date palms, alongside vegetables, figs, cereals, and almonds.

Further northeast, the Djebel Antar range climbs even higher to reach 1,953 metres, while the northwest opens into a flat, rocky reg.

Climatically, Béchar experiences a hot desert climate under the Köppen classification, defined by extremely hot summers and warm winters despite the high elevation. Precipitation is scarce throughout the year, leaving the summers especially dry.

Amidst this arid landscape, agricultural persistence relies on irrigation across thousands of hectares of arable land, supporting date palms, figs, cereals, vegetables, and almonds, alongside livestock ranging from sheep and goats to camels. Historical extraction efforts once centered on coal mines, shaping localized settlements such as Béchar Djedid, while the broader environment accommodates sand dunes, palm groves, an old ksar, and an ancient fort near Béchar.
